Subject: Getaway Log Cabin??

Hi Tom.
I watch your show often and am looking for a 12 year anniversary getaway for my wife and I. We would like to find a log cabin with the fieldstone fireplace, bearskin rug, etc., to rent for a weekend. Any ideas??? Hey - you should do a show (or at least a blurb) on the Czech/Slovak festival in Bannister, MI some time. Lots of good food, traditional dancing and attire. A lot of immigrants from that part of Europe ended up in the Elsie, Bannister, Ashley area. Some old-timers still speak the language. My brother and I just went to Slovakia and it's a beautiful place with very nice people and awesome culture!! I'll even attach a pic. That's my brother, Dan, in the bottom right hand corner. Good luck and great show!!
Mike Minarik

Hi Michael,
Sorry I am just getting back to you. The best thing to do is go to our web site www.greatgetaways.tv and click on Destinations. There you will find a selection of the areas we have been with an assortment of lodging. I am sure that you will find that perfect getaway here.

Subject: RE: Fundraiser for Lions Club

Good Morning Tom,
My husband and I just finished watching your color tour of the upper peninsula. Great show. We traveled a good portion of that route about 25 years ago with our young children. We all enjoyed it tremendously. After watching this morning’s show -- we are ready to plan to do it again next fall. Thank you for that. In June of this year I and four other Lenawee County residents chartered a new Lions Club. We call it the Lenawee Noon Lions Club because we have people from all over the County and we meet at noon twice a month. It is a one-hour meeting so people can get back to work. We meet on the 2nd Thursday and the 4th Thursday of each month. The first meeting is a BYOL (bring your own lunch) business meeting and the second meeting is a potluck with a speaker. We are based in Adrian, Michigan – the county seat of Lenawee County in the south east corner of Michigan. We meet in the Human Services Bldg inside the Michigan State University Extension Dept. in their Demo Kitchen. Currently, we have 32 members. We are in the process of planning for our Club. While watching this morning’s show I got a great fundraising idea. Is there a possibility of you coming to Adrian to put on this UP in the Fall as a travelogue? It would be great if it could be in the winter to give people something fun and encouraging to plan for. We have several great locations for the showing. The Croswell Opera House for one. Adrian is home to Siena Heights University and Adrian College. We would have no trouble finding a site for the event. I’m really all excited about the possibility. Would also love to see the show again. Please contact me to tell me how this could happen. If you are not familiar with Lions Clubs you probably know about Leader Dogs for the Blind who train dogs and people for the dogs to give them back their mobility, you have heard of Lions going to 3rd world countries giving eye exams and providing glasses – all free of charge. There is more and more and more. Just let me know and I would be happy to provide more information about Lions – the worlds greatest and largest service organization. I eagerly wait for your reply.

Subject: Grand Portage Show

The Grand Portage show was weird to watch because the voice and picture were about 6 - 8 seconds off. The sound would be finished and the mouth were still going and the picture was still on the person. Those showing what was being sold were well behind. You have not produced a show that was miss coordinated. It was strange to watch.
James Brancheau

Hi James,
We are sorry about the problem. We discovered the mistake after the show went out. We tried to contact the PBS stations but it was too late they where closed for the Holiday. We made some last minute changes in the middle of the show and somehow lost our sync. We don't know how we missed it. Hopefully it will never happen again. What station did you see it on?

Dear Tom
I've been watching your show now for a coupla years. i remember when it was called "the northern experience" (a name i like much better). i've watched shows on oscoda, the bruce peninsula, saginaw bay area, but i am more interested on your shows about the upper peninsula. yes, i'm a "looper", who just can't quite get my stuff together enough to move to the UP, but i cross that bridge every chance i get. to get to the point, the last few years, i've been gathering info on the North Country Trail (mostly the Michigan segment) and i've noticed there is nothing in the libraries, or the hiking shops or anywhere else except for the Headquarters in Lowell and of course, the internet. I think it would be great if you did a show dedicated to the Trail. More people need to know about it and your show would be a great forum. I have only done about fifty miles on the trail, doing sections here and there according to my schedule, but it would be great if you could get the word out, eh? Most people i talk to don't even know about it. thanx for listening, you guys put on a great show and i look forward to many more. eric e. scott

Thanks for the idea. We will look into it.
Tom

Dear Tom,
It was such a pleasure meeting you at the BP gas station in Hillman this weekend. We wanted you to know that we are faithful viewers and enjoy all of the areas that you have covered. Keep up the good work.

Subject: Grey County Tour --

Dear Tom,
A few years ago you had done a show on the Grey County area which in part featured a church in Meaford whose Stained Glass Windows were made from broken glass from a church somewhere in Europe during WWII (I think I have that right). I can't seem to bring up the dialgue that you used to have of that show. We are going to that area in early October and would appreciate you emailing me the dialogue so that we can find that church and visit the other things you highlighted in that show. Is that possible? I am going to call the number that was on your website to get a free guide to Grey County - but there were some things in your show that really piqued my interest and I'd like to see them. Thanks. We really enjoy your show.
Lisa

Here is the excerpt that you are looking for. Have a good time
Tom
"Another historic point of interest can be found at the Christ Church. These special and unique memorial windows were the inspiration of the Reverend Harold Appleyard, Rector of the Parish during World War 2. On leave from the parish, he served as a Military Chaplain during the war years. He noticed shards of broken stained glass around bombed churches. He gathered fragments and received permission from local church authorities to have the glass leaded and returned to Christ Church as a memorial for Canadian men and women who served overseas. The fragments were formed into four windows and are a reason many visitors come to Christ Church. Members of the congregation have made tours of the Church and windows available July and August and by appointmen"

Hi Tom,
I want to thank you for reinforcing my instructions to my nine children. On one of your wonderful programs last week you were wearing a life jacket in the boat. I've preached (perhaps too much) to the children, "If you are on the water, wear a life jacket." I always received a painful look but they obeyed. When they saw you with a life jacket, "Look, dad, he has a life jacket on." That did it. I don't need to preach anymore. Thanks Tom.

hi:
I just caught part of you talking about gps's, in your #231 the best of isle royal, show aug, 04. do you recommend any particular gps? you mentioned that when you had entered your way points you could turn off the gps and turn it on just when you needed it. I have a gps that when I turn it off, move, and turn it back on, it goes back to the first position, in the winter, deer hunting, if any thing over head can cast a shadow on me, no matter how small, it will not get a fix and if I do manage to get a track of my path in the woods and retrace it, the gps will give me an exact trail back but parallel to the first one by 1/4 mile. is this normal or am I ready for a new gps?
richard seibert

Hi Richard,
I talked to the guys at Rockies and they said that you must have an older model. If you have time the Mgr. at Rockies (Rob) said to just give him a call and he would explain the difference in GPS's His number is 810-742-5420

Subject: Appalachian Trail

I wanted to write you with a possible story for your Great Getaways program. My step-son Adam Stanley was a 1998 Monona Grove graduate from Monona, Wisconsin. He was the goalie for the hockey team and was on the golf team. After High School he played Junior Hockey in Maine for a year. He also attended St. Anselm in New Hampshire for 4 years. This is pretty typical for most graduates. However, over the last 6 months he has be hiking the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. He is currently in 40 miles from Maine and close to finishing the 2,174 mile trail. I wasn't familiar with the hiking options of this trail until he made the decision in January he was going to take on this adventure. He started out by himself and has since met up with some great individuals and has made many memories and a multiple of friends. My husband and I, along with his 2 brothers Alex and Austin, met up with him in Bear Mountain New York about a month ago. We hiked along the trail and found out why this is such a great experience. The scenery was absolutely breath-taking. I think this would be a great human interest story. In addition, it would be very education for adults as well as teenagers on what is out there to experience. There are individuals that choose to be section hikers and do a portion of the trail and then there are those like my son who made the choice to hike the whole trail at once. He has continued to keep a journal under www.trailjournals.com which contains his experiences as well as photos. Please take a minute to open up this link. Click on "Journals" that appears in the mint green color bar at the top. Search the journal index for "Stanimal". Once you are in the journal you can review his experiences and photos in the "List By Date" section. You can also sign the guest book leaving information if you would like him to contact you. If you're interested in talking to him about his experiences and would like his email address or would like him to call you, please feel free to contact me at work or home. Thanks for your attention and I look forward to talking with you.
Linda Elliott-Stanley

Hi Linda,
Sounds really great and I am impressed with what your son is doing. I just don't think it fits with what we do. Our focus is on travel that just about anyone can do. I am going to discuss it further with my producer and see what he thinks. I will get back with you soon.

Subject: Program changes

We had enjoyed your program when it was Northern Experience as it introduced us to the wilderness areas of Northern Michigan and Canada. Since the name/format change of your show, we have been disappointed and lost interest. We realize that not everybody likes the great outdoors but what a wonderful tool to introduce "nature" to those who have never experienced the wilderness. We like to see more waterfalls and wilderness trails for the peace and serenity they bring. While shopping malls and city museums can be fun, we liked your show for finding new places to unwind and get in touch with nature. Disappointed former regular viewers.
Rick and Jan Boyers

Hi Rick and Jan,
Have you looked at our show schedule on our web site? Almost 90 % of what we do is still up north wilderness. We have changed somewhat to do some new and different things but mostly have stayed the same. For example our tour of the Leelanau peninsula was one of the best shows that we have ever produced according to our viewer response. Last weeks show was about the tugboat that built the Mackinaw bridge and was laid to rest in Munising Bay, the week before was about all the Rustic Recreation Opportunities across the U.P. and next week is a canoe trip into the Big Wilderness Canoe Area. So don't stop watching we have something for everyone.

Subject: paved trails

Hi Tom,
I am a quadreplegic and have a three wheel handcycle that I like to ride. I am accustomed to riding on rail trails like the Pere Marquette whiich runs Clare to Midland. This Spring or summer i am hoping to take at leaste a week trip into the UP. Are you aware of any similar trails I can ride up there? I need a very flat and level paved surface. I ride up to 30 miles a day or so. Canted sidewalks and hills of any kind are difficult in this bike. Any suggestions??
thanx
Tom D - Houghton Lake

Hi Tom,
I don't know of any place like that other than boardwalks in Manistique and St. Ignace. I do know who can answer that question and that is the Upper Peninsula Travel and Recreation Association. Give them a call at 1-800-562-7134.
Good Luck

Tom,
Sorry to hear that. Did they at least offer to send you a guide or direct you to their web site? There is a wonderful hard trail in the Shiawassee Wildlife Refuge just outside Saginaw. We have a show about it next week. For more info go to http://midwest.fws.gov/shiawassee/ If you are still interested in finding places in the U.P. go to there web site at

I brought up the north shore on the web site, but it didn't give me the information on these two activities which I will need to shedule the vacation. Thank you, You do a wonderful job on your show. Regarding the show ‘Leelanau Peninsula’, when will this show be aired in the Grand Rapids area? Your website states that it would be shown today, April 28th, on WGVU. However, if you pick the link to PBS stations and times, it states Sundays at 1:30. Well, today is Wednesday. Do you know what date and time this show will be aired? I am a part time resident of Leelanau County, and am very anxious to see this show. I learned about it through my association with Leelanau Vintners.
Thankyou,

Hi Todd,
The show will be airing Sunday at 1:30pm. We put the first day a show will air in our schedule and that is Wed. at 9:30pm. It is fed to all the stations at this time and then they each have their own run time. I hope you enjoy it.

Greetings from Newfoundland and Labrador Tom,
Watched Great Getaways on Saturday on PBS , your show on Ontario here in Canada, thought you might be interested in doing a show on our Atlantic province of Newfoundland and Labrador, affectionately known as "Canada's Best Kept Secret" people are amazed at what is here for scenery against the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean. I moved here from the province of Alberta 2 years ago and now definitely call this home now. Your Ontario show had shown many old buildings and architecture in it, our city of St. John's which i live in , is the oldest city in North America est 1497 and has many many old buildings built back then and still flourishing today as tourist sights. Our famous Signal Hill overlooking the city was where Marconi received the first Transatlantic wireless signal in 1901 from England. And I can't say enough about the people and the hospitality here, cruise ships constantly make this their stop over on routes scheduled to other destinations. If you or staff have never visited here before it is well worth the time to spend some time here and I hope one day you will consider a show about our city and province, So many times because of the central point of entry by air from other countries to Toronto and Ottawa in Ontario I think people are really missing out on what the rest of Canada has to offer and especially Newfoundland .
Keep up the great shows
Allen Willie Viewer St. John's Newfoundland and Labrador

Sounds Great to us Allen. We will need more info and will contact you soon.
Sincerely
Tom

So, I went to the www.greatgetaways.tv web site and did a little browsing. I have three questions. 1) Can you tell me if any of these shows are scheduled for TV stations in the Dayton, OH or Cincinnati, OH areas? 2) Is there another way to view these programs (DVD, VHS, Internet, etc.) other than on TV? Sorry but no. 3) Is there a single document that describes all the programs available? Past shows. Thanks so much. Hello,
My name is Lee Pechauer and I live way down here in Sandusky Ohio, between Cleveland and Toledo. I just saw your episode about Baraga County. My parents live in Pequaming, 2 properties down from the Ford Bungalow home. They own one of the school houses in Pequaming, and they are best friends with the owners of the old Ford mill and water tower that still stands. Seeing your show about L'anse, Baraga, and Pequaming all the way down here in Ohio is UNBELIEVABLE!!!! I was just up in Pequaming last week! I also know Steve Koski, the man you interviewed from Indian Country Sports. My question is, how could I obtain a copy of this program. I would like to give it to my parents. There isn't cable television in Pequaming, and I know they would love to see this episode. There friends Pete and Lil Van Straton, who own the old Ford mill I know would also love to see this episode. They are also very good friends with Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Thompson, the owners of the Ford Bungalow, and I know they would really love to see this episode as well. Please let me know if there is a way of obtaining a copy, and like I said, seeing these areas on television all the way down here in Ohio in impressive. I love the Upper Peninsula, I know my parents do, and it is great to see a show about the north woods like yours, here in Ohio.
Thank You.

Subject: Specialty Subjects

Tom and Crew,
I was wondering if you had any plans or considered doing a little more specialized show that featured some of the shipwrecks or covering a more in depth presentation of the mining history of the U.P. There are some great stories of when Copper was a boom metal for the region. There are some great underwater preserves, including the shipwrecked coast guard ship the Mesquite. The Mesquite was purposely sunk off of the Keweenaw peninsula as part of an underwater preserve. I know of a few locals up in the Keweenaw that could provide great insight in some of the regions shipwrecks. This would be a little more of a specialized subject, but many of your viewers might be interested in the history of these wrecks and would give them an opportunity to see something that many would never see on their own. I have enjoyed your shows for years. I am originally from the U.P. so it is nice to get a little piece of home when watching your show. Thanks and keep up the good work.

Thanks for the suggestions Mike we will keep it in mind.
Thanks
Tom

Could not find Pinewood Lodge B&B info on web-site - they were on 1/3 show. Is it there and did I miss something?
